Billy G Dyer of Wartburg

October 6, 1940 — July 9, 2023

Billy Gene Dyer, age 82, of Wartburg made his final journey to his eternal life on Sunday, July 9, 2023.  His beloved wife of 41 years was by his side.  He was born October 9, 1940, with such love for the Lord, his family and ginseng, and those who knew him would surely agree.  Billy worked on his family’s dairy farm when he was young and when he graduated high school, he was hired by Highland Telephone where he retired 44 years later.  He was very proud of this accomplishment and made a point to tell everyone he knew (and those he didn’t).  After retirement Billy drove a school bus for Morgan County for 10 years.  He drove football and basketball teams, made many field trips and many children got to know him and his love for people.  He loved to travel and drive that bus around for those kids.  He never met a stranger.  If you wanted to hear a good story or a funny joke (or even if you didn’t), he always had one to tell.  A few stories he told stand out among the many but when he worked for Highland most everything was done by hand.  He spoke often of how he had to crawl out of bed in the middle of the night.  There were lines down and in the dead of winter coming home with his pant legs frozen to his boots.  He also told many stories about his ginseng adventures.  He knew those mountains around him like the back of his hand.  He would always end up in the same place… right across his house.  We would sit and laugh when he talked about looking for those 4 prongs!

Billy loved to read his bible.  He always made extra time early each morning to devote to scripture.  Front to back and start all over again.  I would like to know how many times he read it throughout his life… many I know. He attended Macedonia Church when he was a young boy, living with his grandparents Mitt & Elsie Dyer.  IN his adult years he attended Oak Ridge Primitive Baptist Church where he loved his church family so dearly.

Its hard to summarize the life of a good man who gave so much, loved so hard, and spoke of the things he was passionate about, like the Bible.

A special thank you to Alan Dyer who is like a son and for the many things he has done to help over the years.  Also, David Dyer for your help, love and support.  The life of this great man is one to be celebrated.

Billy is preceded in death by his parents Bill and Mildred Dyer; grandparents Mitt and Elsie Dyer; son Barry Dyer; brothers James & Jesse Dyer; sister Bobby Hall.

He leaves behind his wife Betty Dyer; brother David (Martha) Dyer; sister Betty Ann Mills; children Jeff Dyer and Dave, Susan Dyer, Chuck (Sibylee) Schubert, Donnie (Debbie) Patterson, Missy (Adam) Bastian; grandchildren Jessica (Colt) Smith, Allison (Logan) Adkins, Brittany Schubert, Adam (Heather) Susak, Jacob Susak (Eustacia), Kiefer Dyer, Kaleb Dyer, Konnor Dyer; great grandchildren Aidan McGinley, Autumn Smith, Sylas Susak, Cloe Smith, Ellie Anna Susak and baby girl Susak coming October 9, 2023 (Billy’s birthday) 😊.
